The Economist – Frack on: People should worry less about fracking, and more about carbon

26 November 2011

According to a recent article in The Economist, Europe has large shale gas resources which could provide affordable gas, new jobs and reduce dependence on gas imports, but environmental concerns could make accessing them challenging.  The article comments on the safe use of fracking noting, “The technique has been in regular use in the conventional oil and gas industry since the 1940s; and in all that time no aquifer is known to have been contaminated by fracking.”

The article states that the risks from the process is comparable to other parts of the oil and gas exploration production process, and that any risks are minimized by high environmental standards and should not therefore stop exploration.
